I'm a fan of a lot of Japanese media, they have a tonne of unique and insightful stories and characters. Over the years though, I've noticed that there's this all too common trend of the type of villains we see; namely nihilistic, misanthropic ones who exist largely for the audience to hate while being devoid of sympathetic motives. Given the current state of Japan and its worsening mental health epidemic, I have to ask whether the abundance of these characters is a result of it, and what can be done to better represent and offer hope to those who feel hopeless.
