Final Fantasy XIV players are a special breed; no offense, they just are different than most of your standard Final Fantasy or even MMO enjoyers.

And that’s why it was so nutty to see two different billboards pop up in Texas last week that prominently featured not only an invitation for players to come to an in game nightclub for some “adult fun” but also had FFXIV characters front and center, plus the logo for the game itself on the billboard.

Outside of being used and referenced in memes, this is actually not great news for the FF XIV community. The characters featured on the billboards actually were wearing modded outfits, something that stings a little more knowing that parent company Square Enix is in the midst of cracking down on in game.

The mod used on the characters on the billboard is technically not even released, as it was datamined from an upcoming release called the annual Moonfire Faire event. And to make it even a little more spicy, this is all taking place nearly two months after Director Naoki Yoshida made a statement where he decried mods and third party tools, and even said that it included "Any actions or public statements that promote the use of third-party tools."

Seems like the billboards were eventually taken down by choice by the person who created them and had them put up, but how big of a backlash is brewing between the players and FFXIV community members and Square Enix? That is something that is still to be determined. Would you go to an event in your favorite video game if it was advertised on a billboard? Tell me about it, in the comments below
